Die Systematik der Familie Ichthyophiidae (Fischwühlen) [TAYLOR, 1968]

Die Mitglieder der Familie Ichthyophiidae stammen aus Asien. Auch wenn der Name "Fischwühle" etwas anderes vermuten lässt, leben sie ausschließlich terrestrisch. Fischwühlen sind, soweit bekannt, eierlegend. Die Fortpflanzung erfolgt in der Regenzeit. Sie legen ihre Eier in Hohlräumen im feuchten Boden ab. Man nimmt an, dass die Gelege vom Muttertier bewacht werden. Die Larven suchen nach dem Schlüpfen sofort das Wasser auf, denn sie leben aquatisch. Die Metamorphose findet zumeist nach einigen Wochen statt. Zur Familie gehören die beiden Gattungen Ichthyophis (mit rund 50 Arten) und Uraeotyphlus (mit 8 Arten).
